A bit about Barbara

At a most fundamental level I believe that everyone is: good, intelligent, enthusiastic about life and others, powerfully self-determining, relational and co-operative. I believe that the only reason that people may not behave in ways that reflect this is because of hurts endured and the lack of opportunity or support to recover from these hurts. I also believe that healing and recovery from hurts is possible at any stage of our lives. Connection with caring others who hold us in positive regard is key to recovery and indeed the rewiring of our brains.

I have been following the groundswell of neuro-science research and it inspires my ways of understanding and working with people, as well as confirming my fundamental beliefs about them. We are in exciting times of evidenced based understandings about what makes us thrive or fail to do so. I feel privileged to assist people with knowledge and skills from neuro-science as my foundation.

The Harakeke Photo

As a weaver of harakeke/New Zealand flax there have always been many harakeke bushes in my gardens. The rare phenomenon pictured here was spotted one winter’s morning and luckily I photographed it as a few days later it burst apart. In Maori traditional understandings the centre three blades of the flax bush are called te rito and represent the baby (centre newest blade), the mother (the next blade out) and the father (who is next out from the mother).

I have always loved this image both for its beauty and its messages. Things from the early phases of our lives can pierce into consciousness much later on and, like this image, the wise adult flexes and changes and holds a context of love around the inner child.
