Self care – A focus for the new year

January 9, 2016 by Barbara Greene

Self CareSelf care – What are your thoughts about it? Do you think it is selfish or essential?

I think self care is essential so have chosen it as my theme word for 2016.

Yes, a focus on self care for a year!

Hopefully you don’t need me to tell you what self care should be or you. Self care is very individual but some common themes can be found and the the concept is recognised enough that the 24th of July each year is International Self Care Day

Understanding that self-care is good is one thing but remembering to prioritise it can be another. My thinking here is right in line with previous posts about the power of the decision in helping new habits happen. Decide it, commit to it, figure out how to fit it in to an already busy life . . .

Our lives are all too often all too busy. Self-care packaged as fun or pleasure has a higher likelihood of happening. I was going to make ‘fitness’ my theme word for the year but changed it to self-care even though enhancing fitness is a high priority. Why? I changed because self-care can include massage and other forms of receiving. Important to include the balance.

You got it, this post is nothing that you didn’t know (maybe you didn’t know about International Self-Care Day though). This post is to say it to you loud and clear that you are worth it. I encourage you to take a moment and commit to some ways of nurturing yourself. Please start by knowing that it is not selfish – the world needs you well rested and well nourished.
